“Tell me about yourself” and other dreaded interview questions

This morning, I had a telephone interview for a winter internship. While the interview was one of the least formal interviews I’ve ever had, it was still nerve wrecking–partially because I really want this internship and partially because of the first thing my interviewer said: “Tell me about yourself.”

Oh that dreaded phrase.

I’m not sure how I did. When I replied, I talked a little bit about my background, my experiences and my non-academic hobbies. Later on I found an article that gives you pointers on replying to that question in a coherent and timely manner. While I could have used that advice prior to my interview this morning, I will keep the author’s advice for future interviews.

Other dreaded and/or difficult questions:

  • What’s your greatest weakness?
  • What do you plan to bring to (company name) in the first three/five/six months?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

What are some other dreaded or difficult questions? How do you answer them?
